G.S. Pisarenko Institute for Problems of Strength of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (full name), G.S. Pisarenko
IPS NAS of Ukraine (abbreviated name), hereinafter "the Institute", is the scientific research entity within the organizational
structure of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Founded according to resolution of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine № 211 of September 14, 1966
on the basis of the Department of Strength of the Institute for Problems of Material Science of the Ac. Sci. of the Ukr.SSR, the
Institute has been functioning as a research institution since October 1, 1966. Up to 1991, the Institute was known as the
Institute for Problems of Strength of the Ac. Sci. of the Ukr. SSR, from 1991 to 1994 - as the Institute for Problems of
Strength of the Ac. Sci. of Ukraine, from 1994-2002 - as the Institute for Problems of Strength of the NAS of Ukraine. In
accordance with resolution of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine (November, 2002) the Institute has been named in honor
of its founder and first director G.S. Pisarenko, an outstanding Ukrainian mechanician, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine.
The Institute is under the authority of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and is affiliated with the Department
of Mechanics of the NAS of Ukraine.
The Institute is a state non-profit scientific organization with the rights of a legal person. In its activities the Institute
is guided by the acts of the NAS of Ukraine, the regulations and statutory acts of the NAS of Ukraine, as well as the Institute
regulations. The Institute concludes agreements on scientific and technical cooperation with organizations including foreign
and international ones and carries out its foreign economic activity in the established order.
The Institute incorporates 8 scientific departments, scientific and organizational department, general institute laboratory of
mechanical tests and metallographic researches, 3 laboratories as a part of scientific departments. The heads of 6 scientific
departments are doctors of sciences, and 2 scientific departments, laboratories and scientific and organizational department
are headed by candidates of sciences. At present there are 229 people working at the departments of the Institute. Among them
there are 117 research associates, including 3 academicians of the NAS of Ukraine (V.T.Troshchenko, V.V.Matveev, V.V.Kharchenko)
and 1 corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine (V.A.Strizhalo), 23 doctors and 58 candidates of engineering science. 6
postgraduate students do their postgraduate studies at the Institute.
At present, investigations at the Institute are performed in the following research areas approved by the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine:
- ultimate state and strength criteria of materials and structures;
- calculation and experimental methods for studying the stress-strain state;
- fracture mechanics and survivability of structures with cracks;
- vibration of nonconservative mechanical systems.
The development of these lines of research involves studying the ultimate state and strength criteria of structural elements of
power, transport, and aerospace engineering, and thermal and nuclear power engineering, which operate under extreme conditions;
studying the integrity and survivability of materials and structures with crack-like defects under static and cyclic thermomechanical
loading, as well as reliability of mechanical systems under conditions of vibration; devising methods for the calculation and
investigation of the stress-strain state of structural elements taking into account the influence of manufacturing, service,
and other factors accompanying their operation; examination of the technical conditions of structures in operation by non-destructive
methods and elaboration of calculation and instrumental methods for determining their remaining life at the stages of development of
non-localized and localized damages.
Since the organization of the Institute, its researchers have published more than 9,000 articles and 110 monographs, defended almost
70 doctoral and 400 PhD theses. Among the awards of scientists of the Institute for scientific achievements - 11 State Prizes in
Science and Technology, 13 Prizes named after outstanding scientists of the NAS of Ukraine, 4 prizes for young scientists, including
two prizes of the President of Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and NAS of Ukraine.
