During the regular reporting session of the General Assembly of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, held on April 23, 2026, in Kyiv, the President of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Anatolii Zahorodnii, presented diplomas to the laureates of prizes named after outstanding Ukrainian scientists based on the results of the 2025 competition.
In order to recognize scientists for discoveries, inventions, and the best scientific works of significant importance for the development of science and the economy of Ukraine, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine annually awards prizes named after outstanding Ukrainian scientists. The Directorate of the Institute announces with deep sorrow that on January 25, 2026, at the age of 96, the distinguished Ukrainian scientist in the field of mechanics of deformable solids and machine dynamics and strength, one of the founders and leaders of the Ukrainian scientific school of mechanical oscillations and vibration reliability, Chief Research Scientist of the Institute and Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Valentyn Volodymyrovych MATVEEV, passed away.
We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues on their loss.
His scientific achievements and personal integrity will be remembered with deep respect by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

MATVEEV Valentyn Volodymyrovych
(November 10, 1929 – January 25, 2026) – a distinguished scientist, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, and Honored Worker of Science of Ukraine.
Valentyn Volodymyrovych Matveev was one of the founders and leading figures of the Ukrainian scientific school of mechanical oscillations and vibration reliability. His research laid the groundwork for modern methods of analyzing vibration damping in complex mechanical systems, as well as the dynamic strength and service life of highly loaded components in turbomachinery, aviation, power engineering, and aerospace technology.
His professional career was closely associated with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the G.S. Pisarenko Institute for Problems of Strength of the NAS of Ukraine, where he progressed from research scientist to Head of Department, Deputy Director for Research, and ultimately Chief Research Scientist. He made an outstanding contribution to the development of mechanics in Ukraine and played an active role in scientific councils, expert committees, and editorial boards of international journals, helping to coordinate fundamental and applied research in close cooperation with industry.
In addition to his scientific accomplishments, Valentyn Volodymyrovych was a dedicated mentor and teacher. Under his supervision and guidance, dozens of highly qualified researchers were trained, many of whom continue to advance the fields he helped establish, both in Ukraine and internationally. He was widely respected for his intellectual rigor, fairness in scientific debate, professional integrity, and genuine kindness toward colleagues and students alike.
We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues on their loss.
His legacy will endure through his publications, his students, and the scientific community he helped shape.

On December 5, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted Resolution No. 4131‑IX “On awarding the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Prize for Young Scientists for 2023.”
This resolution determined the winners of the 2023 competition for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Prize for Young Scientists. In accordance with the Regulations on the Prize, 50 works were awarded.

On May 26-28, 2026, the G.S. Pisarenko Institute for Problems of Strength of the NAS of Ukraine will host the international scientific conference “ACTUAL PROBLEMS OF MECHANICS AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING – 2026”. The conference is co-organised by National Committee of Ukraine for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and leading Ukrainian research institutions in the field of mechanics. The G.S. Pysarenko Institute for Problems of Strength of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine received a Certificate of Recognition of Measurement Capabilities issued by
the State Enterprise “All-Ukrainian State Scientific and Production Center for Standardization, Metrology, Certification and Consumer Protection” (SE “UKRMETRTESTSTANDART”)
The certificate confirms that the Center for Mechanical Testing of Materials and Structural Elements has the competence and technical capability to perform measurements in accordance with the requirements of DSTU EN ISO 10012:2022 Measurement management systems. Requirements for measurement processes and measuring equipment (EN ISO 10012:2003, IDT; ISO 10012:2003, IDT).
Measurement capabilities
The Center's recognized capabilities include testing of metal and polymer materials in accordance with national, European, and international standards, in particular:
• tensile testing at room and elevated temperatures;
• hardness measurement using the Brinell method;
• long-term strength testing;
• impact strength testing;
• research into fatigue characteristics, crack resistance, and fatigue crack growth rate;
• testing of polymer and composite materials for tensile strength, compression, shear, and moisture absorption.
A complete list of standards according to which the tests are conducted is provided in the appendix to the certificate.

On April 29, 2025, a ceremonial unveiling of a memorial bas-relief was held at the Institute in honor of the outstanding Ukrainian scientist and mechanic Valerii Trokhymovych Troshchenko.
Valerii Trokhymovych Troshchenko led Institute for problems of strength for over 20 years and later remained its honorary director.
Valerii Trokhymovych Troshchenko was an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, professor, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, and a laureate of State Prizes in the field of science and technology. He was awarded numerous prestigious State honors.
His scientific research encompassed a wide range of fundamental and applied problems in the mechanics of deformable solids and structural strength. His scientific achievements have been recognized both in Ukraine and by the international community of mechanics.
In honor and remembrance of Valerii Trokhymovych, the event was attended by representatives of the leadership of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and members of the Department of Mechanics and Machine Science: Academicians of the NAS of Ukraine V.L. Bohdanov, A.F. Bulat, V.M. Nazarenko, V.D. Kubenko, O.Ya. Hryhorenko, M.I. Bobyr, and Corresponding Members of the NAS of Ukraine V.P. Poshyvalov and K.V. Babii.
The Director of the Institute, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine O.Yu. Chyrkov, colleagues of Valerii Trokhymovych, and invited members of the Academy of the NAS of Ukraine attended the unveiling ceremony and paid tribute to the eminent scientist.
Oleksandr Troshchenko, the son of Valerii Trokhymovych, personally cut the ribbon and unveiled the bas-relief.
G.S. Pysarenko Institute for problems of strength of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, according to the results of the performance evaluation for the period 2017-2023, is classified as category “A” (Resolution of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine of 19.03.2025 No. 86). All scientific departments of the Institute are assigned to category “A”.

The topics of the conference reports covered a wide range of topical issues of modern theoretical and applied mechanics, namely mechanics of composite materials and structural elements, shell systems and structural elements, long-term deformation and fracture, interaction of physical and mechanical fields in heterogeneous media and structural elements, issues of stability and motion control of mechanical systems, interaction of elastic systems with fluid and gas flows, mechanics of mechanical engineering structures and geotechnical mechanics, mechanics of rocket and spacecraft
In accordance with the scientific theme, the reports presented at the conference were heard in scientific institutions in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Lviv with the possibility of connecting everyone to the relevant links on-line.
The NASU academician Vyacheslav Bogdanov, as Co-Chair the Organizing and Program Committees, opened the conference. He read the greeting speech on behalf of the NASU President, academician Anatoliy Zagorodnyi, and delivered a keynote speech “The role of academician Timoshenko in the foundation and development of mechanics in Ukraine”. The following plenary and sectional sessions of the conference featured 235 reports of mechanical scientists from Austria, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Turkey, UK, and Ukraine. In particular, scientists of the G.S. Pisarenko Institute for Problems of Strength, NASU, presented over 30 oral reports in three sessions with the Session Chairman Dr. Oleksandr Chirkov, Institute Director, and a total of 65 researchers took part in the event in the offline and online modes.
A close interest to the conference drawn on the part of representatives of Ukrainian and foreign academic and educational institutions confirmed the theoretical and practical significance of research on topical issues of theoretical and applied mechanics for the further development of fundamental science and its applications.

On May 3, 2023, a regular meeting of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine was held under the chairmanship of Anatoly Zagorodnyi, the President of the NAS of Ukraine. Young scientists of the NAS of Ukraine presented their scientific reports. In particular, the report "Development of methods for ensuring vibrational reliability of structurally inhomogeneous mechanical systems" was presented by Oleg Derkach (Ph. D., department head G.S.Pisarenko Institute of Problems of Strength of NAS of Ukraine). The report summarized the results of fundamental and applied studies of the dynamics and strength of composite structural elements and impellers of turbomachines.

Pisarenka of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, famous Ukrainian scientist in the field of mechanics of deformable solids and dynamics and strength of machines, doctor of technical sciences, professor, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Anatoly Pavlovich ZINKOVSKY. The bright memory of Anatoly Pavlovich will forever remain in the hearts of everyone who knew and worked with him.
